A celebration of student work as exhibition opens at Taigh Chearsabhagh

91ÊÓƵÍø North, West and Hebrides students’ work went on display last week as the annual Open Studios Exhibition launched.

The showcase of work from NC Art & Design and BA (Hons) Fine Art students featured work from twelve students studying courses based in North Uist.

The annual exhibition provides students with the opportunity to bring their art to new audiences and welcome the local community to view their work. The unique culture and landscape of Uist and its strong creative community is always a huge draw for students who join the North Uist based Art courses from across our island and highland communities." .

Student Maggie Barker is based on the Isle of Lewis but has been working with 91ÊÓƵÍø North, West and Hebrides lecturers to be able to study online and come to the studios in Uist and work face to face for residential blocks. She said: “Living as part of the environment in the Outer Hebrides has been essential to my work as an artist. The understanding of landscape and sense of place and a friendly and supportive community is totally unique to the course.”

Lecturer Rosie Blake said: Once again the opening night saw a fantastic attendance including several generations of alumni, local artists, stakeholders and visitors to the island. We want to extend a huge well done to all of our students who worked as a team to produce show and filled the studios with an exceptionally high standard of works.

The quality and range of work on show demonstrates the strength of these courses – with a cohort of students brimming with creativity, responding to our unique island environments.

Lecturer Anne Mackenzie said: “The Open Studio shows the creative breadth and ambition of our student cohort this year. With 12 students taking part, the range of work on display is varied and includes sculpture, drawing, painting, printmaking and installation, with much of the work for sale. We are incredibly proud of the students’ achievements over the course of the year and wish them well in their next creative steps.

91ÊÓƵÍø North, West and Hebrides Principal Lydia Rohmer said: “I was so delighted to be able to join our students, staff, and the local community to celebrate with them. The work on display is a credit to the hard work of the students throughout the year.”
